constituency testsについて（２） One-Substitution
引き続きAarts(2017)よりメモ。one代用形について。この本では以下のように書いてある。
（１）One-Substitution：one代用形はN'-constituentsの代用をする。
さて、困ったことに、この説明をメモするには、樹形図を書かなくてはいけないが、このブログ上（ネット上）で書き方が分からない。ということで、事実だけ簡潔に書いていく。
（２）Ben likes the Italian student of English, but not the Spanish one.
この文中のoneはstudent of Englishを指し、studentではない。よって、以下のような文は非文となる。
（３）*Ben likes the Italian student of English, but not the Spanish one of literature.
代用形を使わなければ、...but not the Spanish student of English of literatureということになってしまうからだ。統語論のお話としてこの文でのstudentはN'を構成しておらず、Nになっている。one代用形はN’なので、N’ではないstudentは無理ということになる。では、このようなN'が複数ある表現があったとき、oneは何の代用をするのか。
（５）Macro is certainly a clever Italian student of English, but Paolo is an absolutely briliant one.
このoneを用いない形で表現した場合、（６）と（７）のようになる。
（６）... but Paolo is an absolutely brilliant Italian student of English.
（７）...but Paolo is an absolutely brilliant student of English.
ここから、N'が複数ある場合、解釈があいまいになることが分かる。
さて、次の対比を考える。
（８）*The student of chemistry was older than the one of physics.
（９）The student with short hair was older than the one with long hair.
見た感じでは同じ構造をしているように見えるが、（８）は誤りで（９）は誤りではない。（８）では（７）までの例と同じようにoneがstudentの代用が無理で、student of chemistryの代用をしていると考えれば説明がつく。一方（９）では、studentがN'を形成し、oneの代用形で置き換えられる。この違いは、with short hairが意味的にstudentと密接な関係になく、付加詞（adjunct）としてふるまうのに対し、of chemistryがstudentと意味的に密接な関係があり項（argument）としてふるまう（study chemistryを考えてみる）、という点に起因する。樹形図が書けないのでイメージしにくいが、まあ、あとから見返してもなんとなくわかりそう。
さて、伝統的に生成文法で仮定されてきたこうした一般化には反例があると久野・高見 (2007)では述べられていて、（１０）や（１１）のような文は、適格と判断する母語話者が多いらしい。
（１０）I have recently had the opportunity to read an evaluation of US Intelligence and one of Israeli Intelligence.
（１１）John Smith is a student of world affairs, and William Thomas is one of human nature.
これらの例ではstudentの代用にoneが使われているので、本来であれば非文になりそうだが、そうならないというのは非常に不思議と言える。久野・高見 (2007)では一応、「of Aの項解釈が強ければ強いほど、One-Substitutionが適用しやすい」という想定を提出しているが、それに対する反例のようなものもあり、いまだにこの謎は解明されていない（らしい）。ただし、N'にしか適用できない、という以前の考え方に不備があることは確かだ、と述べている。
