one of (the) many
以下の二種類の表現がある。
（１）In Newark, New Jersey, Mary Lombardo ― one of the many ordinary citizens whose reactions were recorded by the nation's journalists ― touched a small cross around her neck.（関西学院大）
（２）I love having a pony in my city neighborhood, but this is just one of many wonderful and surprising things about living here.（杏林大）
一般的にone ofのような【数量表現 of】の後ろは限定詞のthe / these / those / 所有格がついた名詞句が来ることになっている。それにのっとって考えれば、（１）はいいけれど（２）は本来的にはおかしいということになる。ただし、【one of many】というtheのつかない表現はかなり頻繁に使われている。もう少し例を挙げる。
（３）He is one of many “flavorists” who work at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) near Princeton, N.J.（昭和大）
（４）After all, once means "eleven" in Spanish ― like intoxicado, it's just one of many false friends that can cause horrific consequences.（成蹊大）
manyだけではなく、severalの例もある。
（５） Susan Clancy is one of several psychologists who have made detailed studies of people who claim to have been abducted. （青山学院大）
（６）The ancestor of the modern language that we now know as English was one of several languages from Frisia, in modern day Holland, brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxon tribes, who invaded the island after the end of Roman rule in the early fifth century.（中央大）
（７）They regard Hawking as only one of several leading physicists.（明治学院大）
もちろん、theがつくケースもある。
（８）One of the several waves of interest in the gifted appeared around the second half of the 1950's.（COCA）
これまでの経験上、theがつかないパターンは主語にはならないなあ、と感じていて、圧倒的にbeの補語あるいは名詞との同格で使うことが多い気がする。が、探してみると、theがつかずに主語になっているケースも、多くはないが、見つかる。
（９）One of several issues left unresolved after the hurried passage of CERCLA was the timing of litigation.（COCA）
ofの後ろに数量表現が来ればtheがなくていいのか、というとそういうことではない。oneではなくsomeやmostやallを用いて調べると、theがつかない例はほぼ見つからない。だから、oneの特性の一つと言っていいと思う。
ちなみに、COCAで検索すると以下のようになる。
one of the many：1962
one of many：2730
one of the several：101
one of several：2327
そもそも、theがつく場合とつかない場合で意味は同じなのかというと、よく分からない。言葉で説明はできないけれど、なんか違う気がする。まあ分からない。one of the severalが極端に少ないのもよく分からない。限定詞はわかったような分からないような、非常に難しい。たがいに共起できるものとできないものがあり、結構細かい。その点で一つ面白い例を追加。
（１０）The Western Union Telegraph Company was at first only one of many such companies that developed around the new medium during the 1850s.（関西大）
一般に限定詞の仲間とされるsuchはsuch aの形では冠詞と共起できるが、定冠詞theと共起することができない。（１０）ではofの後ろにsuchがあるのでむしろtheを付けたら非文になりそう。と思いきや、ネットで検索すると意外とone of the many suchという表現は見つかる。難しい。
