no matterについて

以前の記事でno matterの後ろに【the名詞句】が来る例があるという点について書いた。

Culicover, P. W. (1999). Syntactic nuts: Hard cases, syntactic theory, and language acquisition (Vol. 1). Oxford University Press.という本を読んでいたら、no matterと題する節を発見したので部分的に読んでみた。

（１）No matter what John says, we're going to see that movie.

こうした表現において、no matterに後続する部分は、「たとえジョンが何を言おうとも」というわけだから、「何を」にあたる部分は文字通り何が埋めてもいいわけで、そういう意味でそのよう内容を後続させるno matterをfree-rangerと呼んでいる。

（２）regardless of what else Mary says,...

（３）regardless of the weather

（４）no matter what else Mary says,...

（５）*no matter the weather

同じようなfree-rangerのregardless ofと比較してみても、以上のような違いがあるので、no matterの文法的な特徴は意味に求められるという考え方は成り立たないといっている。

（が、しかし、前の記事で書いたようにそもそも（５）のような名詞句が後続する例はかなりの数見られるので、そもそも（５）が間違い、という判断が事実と異なるように感じられる。ちなみにCOCAでそのままno matter the weatherで検索すると、35例出てくる。）

no matterが持つ特異性はどこから来るのか。試しに動詞のmatterがら引き出せると仮定して考えてみる。以下の例に見るように、matterというVは名詞句を取らない。これは（５）と同じだ！（本文にAs we can see, this is a reasonable approach since the verb matter does not take direct objectsと書いてあるが、そもそも僕の中ではmatterは自動詞なのでOなんて取らないし、（６）のようなやつはmatterがOを取っているわけではなくて単なる仮主語だろという感じがするが、、、彼らの言うところの補部ということなのかな。。。）

（６）It doesn't matter where you put your hat, you have to go outside.

（７）*It doesn't matter the banana.

bananaというチョイス。。。

それはさておき、（６）の書き方だと、もはやIt doesn't matter whereという塊全体で副詞節みたいになってしまっているように見えること。実はこれは前から不思議で、こういう例はたまに見るし、なんななクワーク先生の本にも出てくる。

（８）It doesn't matter whether or not he finds a job, he's getting married.

しかも、そこには（1100ページ）、The longer and more emphatic constructions It doesn't matter whether (initial only) and No matter whether can also be used to introduce clauses that are alternative conditional-concessive.って書いてあって、そうかもう副詞節的にいけちゃうのかぁという感じ。

COCAで検索してみても、少数ながら、こういう例は（書き言葉の事例で）見つかる。ちなみに、検索してみていた中で、次のような例を見つけた。

（９）It doesn't matter who you are, how much money you've got, your race, your ethnicity- they belong to you.

who you are / how much money you've gotまではいいが、your race, your ethnicityって完全に名詞句。こういう、前の部分で言ってるから分かるよね的なノリの構文は結構あるよなぁという印象。

話を戻して、こういう（名詞句NG）関連性みたいなものもありそうな気がするが、でも、違いもある、と書かれている。

（１０）no matter what the time (is)

（１１）It doesn't matter what the time *(is)

beを省略できるかどうかが違うというわけだ。そして！Moreover, no matter marginally permits a 'concealed question' as its complement, while the verb matter does not.と書いてある。no matterの後に来る【the名詞句】は潜伏疑問文という解釈なわけですね。

（１２）? no matter the reason

（１３）*It simply doesn't matter the reason.

でもね、思うじゃないですか。正直、（１３）みたいなやつ本当はあるんじゃないのかな的な。

（１４）It doesn't matter the color of the individual. 

COCAで調べるとこんな感じで少数ながら出てくる。ヤッパリネ

さて、説明の中で、...we also can observe first that there are verbs that allow concealed questions in extraposed complements.と書いていあるが、僕の記憶が正しければ、Grimshawは潜伏感嘆文は外置の位置に現れるが、潜伏疑問文は外置の位置には現れないといっていたはず。しまし、Culicoverのこの本では

（１５）It simply wasn't clear to me the reason for his anger.

という例文が載っていて、人によって容認性の差があるのかな、という感じ。

（１６）The reason simply doesn't matter.

このように主語の場合はもちろん問題ない、と書いてある。でも当然

（１７）What the time *(is) simply doesn't matter.

であるから、やっぱりbe抜けは動詞を元にしているという発想では出てこない。じゃあ、名詞由来と考えるのはどうか。

（１８）It is no matter that the mayor is a Republican.

（１９）*It is no matter what party the mayor belongs to.

こうなるので、名詞から派生説もダメそう。

結局、no matterはno matter独自の特徴を持っていると考えよう！

（２１）*You shouldn't use the elevator, no matter how tall a building.

（２２）*no matter how confused each student in the class,...

（２３）no matter how confused each of the students,...

（２６）*no matter how aggressive the man over there,...

いろいろなるほど感はあるが、個人的には、（２２）と（２３）の違いが結構ショッキング。
