the 比較級

読んでいた本に次のような文が出てくる。

（１）They were dressed alike and fed the same foods in an effort to treat them equally, the better to make a strictly scientific comparison of the details of their physical development, their behavior, and, the Kellogs hoped, their speech.（Nim Chimpsky）

比較級にtheがつくケースは受験でも定番の形で、

①of the twoなどの表現と共に

②the比較SV the比較SV

③all the比較/ none the比較

が出てくる。②と③におけるtheは「その分だけ」くらいの意味を持つ副詞のtheで共通しているが、（１）におけるtheも同じタイプである。受験の参考書などで出てくる③に関しては、この形が強調して教えられるが、実際には（１）のようにallなどがつかないケースもある。Huddleston and Pullum (2002)にはこのタイプのtheの説明があり、次の例が載っている。

（２）He went prone on his stomach, the better to pursue his examination. (p1132)

この例に関して次のような説明がある。

（３）...the better is a fronted modifier in the infinitival clause of purpose; the is obligatory in this position but optional in the basic position - compare in order to pursue his examination (the) better.

all the 比較 because / forという形で刷り込まれていると、（１）や（２）のような例も「するためにより一層」と誤って解釈してしまいそうだが、（３）の説明から分かるように、「より一層～するために」という風に不定詞句内の動詞を修飾すると考えるのが正しい。
