受験の難単語メモ（３）abstain
上智問題の語彙問題に次のような問題が出た（2001年）。
I am proud to be able to say that I have always ( ) from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco products.
(a) maintained
(b) suppressed
(c) acquitted
(d) suspended
(e) abstained
答えは(e)のabstain。abstain from A / ingという形で用いる。

to not do something, especially something enjoyable that you think might be bad:
例：He took a vow to abstain from alcohol/smoking/sex.
【ロングマン】
① to choose not to vote for or against something
② to not do or have something you enjoy, especially alcohol or sex, usually for reasons of religion or health
「宗教上または健康上の理由で」というのが参考になる。
次は北里大の問題から。

なかなかしっくりくる。次は金沢医科大の長文問題から。

やっぱりアルコールとかそういうのが多い。
オックスフォード英英の例文に次のようなものがある。

さて、abstain from＋名詞でCOCAで検索をかけると、多い名詞は以下のようになった。
sex / alcohol / food / voting
この中で群を抜いて多いのは、sex

sexをsaveするっていうんですね知りませんでした。
名詞形のabstinenceも確認しておく。

このように動詞と同じでfromと用いることができる。
「控える」と言えば、refrain fromが思いつく。ロングマンアクティベータでは二つの単語をそれぞれ次のように説明している。
refrain：to not do something that you want to do or usually do, especially because you do not want to offend or upset someone
abstain：to decide not to do something, especially something enjoyable, because it is considered to be bad for your health or morally wrong
refrainの「他人に迷惑が掛からないように」という部分はなるほどしっくりくる。電車でもPlease refrain from talking on the phoneみたいなこと言ってるし。
ケンブリッジから一つ例を。
