受験の難単語メモ（１）crestfallen

諸事情により入試で出題される長文中に出てくる難しい単語・熟語を集めることになり、せっかくなので記事としてまとめていく。

（１）Digging in the garden reveals nothing, and the young man is completely crestfallen. （早稲田大　文　2015）

類義語にdowncastが挙がっている。こちらの単語は目について使うことが多そう。

（２）He said nothing and kept his eyes downcast.

（３）Eyes downcast, she continued eating.

ところで、この文は、夢に出てきたようなお宝が彫っても実際にでは出てこない、という流れの中の一文だが、ここで使われているreveal nothingもなかなか高頻度で使う表現だと思う。

（４）Was there a tiny piece of dirt or glass in the eye? A careful examination revealed nothing.（富山大）

「注意ぶかく調べてみたが、何も出てこなかった」くらいの意味だろうか。後ろに形容詞を伴う形も良く出てくる。

（５）However, he started to experience some difficulties with his memory, so he consulted a brain specialist. But two major tests revealed nothing wrong. （関西大）

「特におかしなところは出てこなかった（明らかにならなかった）」くらいの意味。いずれも、「主語によって本来出てきそうな結果が出てこない」というような意味合いで使われていると思う。また、別のタイプのよく見る使い方として、次のような「表情・態度など」が主語になるタイプがある。

（６）June looked at Justine to see if she registered this as an insult, but her face revealed nothing.

「表情からは何も読み取れなかった」くらいの意味だろう。

crestfallenに話を戻す。この語をCOCAで検索してみるとわずか221例しか出てこない。一つ一つの例を見てみると、（A）look / beの補語で使う、（B）分詞構文っぽく使う、というパターンが目立った。叙述用法はあまり多くなく、その場合は、ざっと見たところlook / expressionが修飾されているケースが多い。
