(1)I can carry it empty.
(2)I can carry it while it is empty.
(3)I can carry it (only) if it is empty.
(4)He drinks his Coca Cola cold. (He drinks his Coca Cola only if it is cold.)
(5)I will resign when I feel like it. (I will resign if / at a time I feel like it.)
(7)Though
(9)Jim said he left his house angry and leave his house angry he did.
(10)*Jim said he left his house angry and leave his house he did angry.
(11)Leave his house angry though Jim did, he was much calmer at lunch-time.
(12)*Leave his house though Jim did angry, he was much calmer at lunch-time.
(13)What Jim did was leave his house angry.
(14)They wanted Rosa to find a scratch in Ben's picture.
(15)I wanted Rosa to ride a horse in Ben's picture.
(16)They wanted Rosa to find a scratch in Ben's picture, and find a scratch in Ben's picture she did / *and find a scratch she did in Ben's picture.
(17)I wanted Rosa to ride a horse in Ben's picture, *and ride a horse in Ben's picture she did / and ride a horse as she did in Ben's picture.
(18)What Rosa did was find a scratch in Ben's picture. / *What Rosa did in Ben's picture was find a scratch.
(19)*What Rosa did was ride a horse in Ben's picture. / What Rosa did in Ben's picture was ride a horse.
(20)Bill didn't leave angry at John.
(21)not [Bill left angry at John] (...he left pleased with John)
(22)Bill left [not [angry at John]] (...he left angry at Pete)
(23)[not [Bill left]] angry at John
(24)?*The waiter smiled naked.
(25)The waiter danced naked.
(26)They played a really rather silly game: if you got an answer wrong you had to take off a piece of clothing. The waiter was the first person to be completely undressed, but he wasn't unhappy about it: he stood up unperturbed, he smiled naked and then he proceeded to stand on his head.
