usingについて

2018年の関西大学の長文問題に次のような一文がある。

（１）Nevertheless, recent findings in Belgium of cave bear bones dotted with red paint suggest that prehistoric people may have conducted some kinds of ceremonies using such bones.

ここで下線を引いたusingは「使って」くらいの意味で、ほぼ前置詞的に使われていると思ってよいと考えている。ただし、辞書ではusingを前置詞として記述しているものは見当たらない。

このusingの使用については、中右 (2018) が「...usingは融通が利くと思い込んでいて、なんでもusingで済ませるのだろうか。」と書き、いくつかの理由をあげ、この見方があり得そうだ、と述べている。

個人的に面白いと感じたのは、元は動詞useであるから「～を使う」ということで、前置詞のwithに置き換えられるように思えるが、with以外で置き換えるケースもみられるという点。

（２）Using computers [⇒On computers], students are able to integrate text with graphics.

（３）They communicate with each other using [⇒in] sign language.

動詞由来で前置詞的に使われているものと言えば、barringがある。これは辞書にも記載されている。なお、barも単体で前置詞として似たような意味で使える。

（４）In January 2014, the Botswana government banned hunting, barring a few exceptions. （昭和大）

ここでの例では、普通の分詞構文的にも見えるが、こうしたものが慣用化して前置詞的に使われるようになったのだろう。ちなみに、目的語がexceptionというのもなんか面白い。「除いて」ということであれば、excludingもある。includingほどはあまり見かけない気がするが、次のような例が見つかる。

（５）For example, the EU finally adopted a plan under which the quota is merely an objective, not a mandatory target ― even though the 14% rate of female boardroom participation in Europe, excluding Sweden and Finland, is lower than the United States' 16%.（慶應）

ちなみに、barとbarringみたいな感じで、except - exceptingとsave - savingなんて組み合わせもある。いずれも「除いて」くらいの意味。
