(4)I wonder whether it is possible / *what a tyrant he is.
(5)She must know whether it is possible / what a tyrant he is.
(6)It is amazing *whether it is possible / what a tyrant he is.
(7)You won't believe who Ed has married.
(8) I doubt whether it is possible.
(9)I doubt *who did it.
(10)It's amazing how old they were.
(11)It's amazing how old they were - they were all over 90. [exclamative]
(12)It's amazing how old they were - some were as young as fifteen, while others were over 80. [interrogative]
This has an obvious exclamative reading where they were remarkably old and this is said to be amazing. But there is also an interrogative reading - pace Elliott (1971: 27) -where what was amazing was the answer to the question ‘How old were they?‘.
★pace : used before a person's name to express polite disagreement with what they have said
