easilyの使い方

次のような英文はどういう意味だろうか。

①Best was also the most popular with the fans ― mainly girls ― because he was easily the most handsome.  ［成蹊大］

ここでeasilyという語が使われているが、「簡単に」では明らかに意味がおかしい。ここでは＜by far; beyond question; undoubtedly＞と定義されるような意味で、主に最上級について使われる。日本語では「ずば抜けて／間違いなく」くらいの意味である。最上級ではないが次のような例も見つかる。

②Germany, easily the main receiving country in Europe, had roughly 800,000 immigrants in both 1994 and 1995, but its definition of 'immigrant' is much broader than America's and includes many temporary workers.［鳥取大］

mainは最上級ではないが意味的には最上級に近い、「一番」のニュアンスを持っているので、納得がいく。同じことがby farにも言える。

③ It's no surprise that cars are by far the major danger to these animals. ［立教大］

majorもmainと似た雰囲気を持っているので、同じように考えることができる。

さて、もう一度easilyに戻って例を見てみよう。

④"What was particularly surprising about the Kuna islanders was the amount of cocoa they consumed, which was easily ten times more than most of Americans would get in a typical day," says Dr. Brent M. Egan.［東邦大］

このように＜easily＋倍数表現＞という形でも使われる。もう一例挙げよう。

⑤In addition, in recent years the world has been losing 9 million hectares of forest per year. Forests store easily 20 times as much carbon per hectare as does land in crops.［神戸大］

こういう文では、あまり考えずに読んでいるorこの使い方を知らないと「簡単に蓄えられる」と誤読してしまう。（なお、＜easily＋倍数表現＞に関しては、Marriam-Websterの辞書では＜at the minimum : at least＞という定義が与えられている）

⑥We have long been accustomed to machinery which easily surpasses us in physical ways.［日本大］

ここに使われるsurpassは「凌ぐ、超える」くらいの意味で、Collinsでは＜If one person or thing surpasses another, the first is better than, or has more of a particular quality than, the second.＞と定義される。見てわかる通り、比較的な概念をもつ語なので、majorなどが使えるのと同様に、こうした語が似た振る舞いをするのも納得がいく。なお、exceedも同様と考えてよい（なお、こうした動詞とby farが組み合わさることもある）。

英語には概念上似ていると文法的にも同じ振る舞いをするケースが非常に多い。例えばbehind scheduleやbefore / after / tooなどは、いずれもその意味のうちに比較的意味合いを持っているが、それゆえいずれも比較級と同じように「差」を表す用言が置ける。（tooに関しては比較級と同じ強調語much / way / far / a lotなどを用いる）。今回のeasilyの多様な使い方も同じ観点で理解できるだろう。
