locative inversionについて（１）

受験でもおなじみの項目として倒置がある。その倒置の中でも、場所などを表す前置詞句が文頭に置かれその後が倒置になる構造があり、例えば（１）のbetween them was a high area...がそれにあたる。

（１）However, the mountains that could be seen from each coast actually formed two rows, not one, and between them was a high area of ground that had a moderate climate and many fertile valleys.［関西大］

この現象について扱っている以下の論文から面白いところをいくつか取り出しておく。

Bresnan, J. (1994). Locative inversion and the architecture of universal　grammar. Language, 72-131.

まずタイトルにあるようにこの構造は専門的にlocative inversionと呼ばれている。日本語では場所句倒置構文と多分言われている。locativeという語は、a broad range of spatial locations, paths, or directions, and their extensions to some temporal and abstract lovative domains...を指すと説明されていて、意外と範囲は広い。

（２）Especially worrisome to public health experts is the growing number of TB cases.

この例のように、locative inversionではないinversionもあり（形容詞や分詞が前に置かれる）、一般にこちらは用いられる動詞はbe動詞に限られるという（locative inversionはbeに限られない）。ただし、それに対する反論もあり、例えば次のような例があると指摘するものもある。

（３）Crashing through the woods came a wild boar.

ここでは前置される分詞がlocative / directionalを伴っていて（上の例ではthrough the woods）、これらを取り除くとこうした例の容認性は落ちるらしい。また、そもそもこうした形を許す動詞はそもそもlocativeを伴う動詞であり（come / sit / stand / lieなど）、そうではない動詞では許されない。

（４）*Gathered pointlessly in the yard seemed three women.

ということで、まあ基本的にはlocative inversionはbeに限られずlocative inversionではないinversionはbeに限られると考えておけば大体よさそう。

（５）My friend Rose seated my mother among the guests of honor.

（６）*Among the guests of honor seated my mother my friend Rose / ...seated my friend Rose my mother.

上の対比に見られるように、英語ではlocative inversionは自動詞に限られ、他動詞では無理である。

（７）Among the guests was sitting my friend Rose.

（８）*Among the guests was knitting my friend Rose.

しかしこのペアに見られるように自動詞ならなんでもいいわけでもない。

（９）Among the guests of honor was seated my mother.

上で見たように他動詞はダメだったが、このように受動態になっていれば可であるらしい。ただ、こうしたlocative inversionが受動態で起こる場合はby句がつくと許容されなくなり、また、自動詞の話と同じで、どんな他動詞でも受動態なら可、というわけでもない。
