not only...but alsoについて

受験でも定番の表現にnot only ...but alsoがあるが、次の例はどうか。

（１）Kasparov was not only champion, he was a long way ahead if his closest rivals. （早稲田）

本来的には（文法的には）、二文をつなぐので接続詞のbutがないといけないはずだが、この英文のように、このある種相関的な表現ではこういうbut (also)が抜け落ちている例は意外にも多い。これについて辞書で説明があることはあまりない気がするが（略式ではbut alsoがないことも、という事実を述べているものはある）、CollinsのEnglish Usageにははっきりと次のような説明がある。

（２）When you are linking phrases that begin with a verb, you can omit 'but' or 'but also' and use a personal pronoun instead. For example, instead of saying 'Margaret not only came to the party but brought her aunt as well', you can say 'Margaret not only came to the party, she brought her aunt as well'.

注目すべきは赤字の部分で、人称代名詞を代わりに使う、というのはなるほどという感じがある。要するに、この形は主語が共通の時に使える形式というわけだ。

（３）Not only do you not have to remember a fact, you don't even have to remember where to look it up. （学習院大）

この文のようにnot onlyが文頭に出ると倒置形が使われるというのも受験では定番。ここでもbutがない。これに関してはおなじみマイケルスワンのPractical English Usageで次のように書かれている。

（４）Not only can be moved to the beginning of a clause for emphasis. It is then followed by auciliary verb＋subject; do is used if there is no other auxiliary. But can be left out in this case.
