受験の難単語メモ（５）diffuse

早稲田大学の過去問の長文に次のような英文が出てくる。

（１）Air diffuses through the holes, down narrow tubes called trachea and directly on to the muscles, cells and tissues that need oxygen.

放散する、広める、普及させる、拡散する、浸透する、などの意味がある。ここでは自動詞として使われている。

Cambridgeの次の例文は参考になる。

（２）Television is a powerful means of diffusing knowledge.

次の英文は千葉大から。

（３）Compared to other technologies, the Internet diffused rapidly, its trajectory similar to those of television and radio, each of which reached more than 50 percent of households within a few years of commercial introduction. 

ここの例のように「モノが普及する」の意味でも使える。次のような使い方もある。

（４）The iodine is said to have diffused into the water. 

この使い方に関してはCambridgeの定義に次のようにある。

to (cause a gas or liquid to) spread through or into a surrounding substance by mixing with it

杏林大の次の文法問題におけるdiffuseはまた別の使い方になっている。

Based on the report, the committee has decided that we should take some cost-cutting (　　 ) to diffuse the crisis.
① games 　② measures 　③ experiences 　④ religions

答えは②でtake ~ measuresの重要表現になっている。さて、この問題におけるdiffuseはどういう意味か。当然「危機を拡散する」ではおかしい。次のロングマンの定義が分かりやすい。

to make a bad feeling or situation less strong or serious

日本語にすれば「弱める、鎮める」くらいの意味だろう。ジーニアスを見るとこの訳語のところに（dissipate）とある。次の英文は神戸薬科大から。

（５）This combination of sadness, disappointment, anger, and despair is not easy to dissipate.
