the however
howeverはhowever long / however manyなどの形で名詞節を作る。
(1) Even if you don't like me, we're going to be in each other's lives for however long our best friends are going to be married, and I hope that's a very long time. Forever, probably. (With Any Luck)
ここではhowever long out best friends are going to be married全体が名詞節でforの目的語になっている。このfor however SVはよく使われる言い方。ここは「どれくらいの期間か分からないけどうちらの親友同士が結婚している期間はずっと」くらいの意味。
(2) I wanted to make our horse a loving home for him, for however long I could. (When You Were Mine)
これもfor howeverの例。

実はこの手のhoweverの節の前にtheがつくケースが意外とある。

ここでもthe nextがhoweverの節についている。「何日かかるか分からないけど、とにかくそれに必要な期間は会うの」くらいの意味。
実は、この手の使い方をする場合、howeverが節の形を取らないことも多い。

文法的にどういう理屈なのかは分からないけど、結構面白い。
