speaking of whichについて

成蹊大学の会話問題に次のような部分がある。

John：    　What we need is the feminine touch. I’ll ask a few of the girls in the class, find out what they think, and let you know next time.

Alex：    　That sounds like a plan. Speaking of which, what shall we do about getting her to the party without knowing that she’s going to a party?

文脈は、クラスメートの女の子の誕生日サプライズパーティーの計画をしているところで、ここは、誕生日プレゼントは何がいいか、と話し合っている場面である。

赤字のspeaking of whichはspeaking of Aという「Aと言えば」という表現が関係詞化したもので、直前の発話内容をwhichが受けていると考える。「それに関して言うと、ついでに言うと、そういえば、ところで」など文脈に応じて訳し方には幅があるだろう。

ところで、通勤途中にAmazon PrimeでNow You See Me 2（『グランドイリュージョン２』）を見ていたら、次のような会話があった。

兄：You know, the most heartbreaking moment of my life was when I discovered that you had stolen all my money and split. I didn't realize until now how much of that money you put into your face.

弟：Seriously, is it weird to have more hair in your nose than on your head?

兄：Speaking of, next time you get a hair transplant, you might wanna consider requesting something other than old man pubes. 

元々兄弟二人でマジックをやっていたが、仲たがいして弟が金を持ち逃げした。それを振り返って二人で話している場面だ。会話の内容そもそもがコミカルで面白いが、ここで気になるのはspeaking ofという部分。これは要するに、whichを省いてしまっているということだろう。こういう使い方があるとは全く知らなかったが、試しにCOCAで検索してみると、ざっと見と感じ50例くらいはある。

会話表現では様々に簡略化されるというのは一般的なことなのだろうけれど、whichが消えるとなると、なかなかびっくり。
