totalの使い方

totalは日本語でも「トータル」と言うので馴染みのある単語である。いくつか例文で使い方を確認する。

The companies have a total of 1,776 employees.（Collins）

このように＜a total of A＞の形で「全部［合計］（で）A」の意味になる。 この場合のtotalは名詞である。

The sales campaign was a total disaster.（Longman）

totalには形容詞で「完全な、全くの」の意味を表す使い方がある。この意味の使い方の場合、 ＜total A＞のAにはdisaster / lack / failure / ban / strangerなどがよく使われる。なお、この手のtotalを教える時は僕は一緒に near＋absence / collapse / extinction / end / silence / impossibilityなどを紹介する。

The total cost of the project would be more than $240 million.（Collins）

こちらのように同じ形容詞でも数値的な概念の名詞が来る場合は「合計の」の意味であり、ここでは「合計（トータル）の費用」の意味。

さらに、動詞の使い方がある。

The group had losses totalling $3 million this year.（Longman）

Aに数値がきて、＜S total A＞で「Sは合計でAだ」の意味になる。動詞のこの使い方に関しては、僕はmeasure / weighという動詞と一緒に教える。これらも＜S measure A＞と＜S weigh A＞で数値的にS＝Aという風になる。

この他totalには「破壊する」という動詞の用法がある。

さて、totalには辞書に載っていないさらに別の使い方がある。

Even as advances in health care have allowed women to delay pregnancy, women are having fewer babies total than their mothers and grandmothers did. (TIME)

この、fewer babies totalという部分は「合計でより少ない赤ちゃん」という意味だと思うが、このtotalの使い方は上記のいずれの使い方にも該当しないように思える。実際には、＜数量表現＋名詞＋total＞で「合計～の・・・」の意味でよく使われている。例えば、

In addition, six students were randomly selected from each group (36 students total) to participate in an interview group. 

という例がある。

特に名詞の部分には時間を表す言葉が来るケースが多い。例えば、

I played the game for around 20 hours total.　（京都産業大）

みたいな例はかなり頻繁に出くわす。totalにはin totalという熟語があり、これは「合計で」を表す。

The entire program lasted 6 months in total ...

このような例を見れば、おそらくはin totalのinが抜け落ちた形が定着したと言えるかもしれない。なんとなく、ten years oldのoldみたいな使い方に似ている気もする。あるいは、

We need an extra 6 grams a day maximum.　(Collins)

のmaximumからの影響を受けた使い方とも言える。maximumのこの手の使い方は辞書に掲載されている。at the mostとかat the maximumと説明されている。

They used to live between 40 to 60 years maximum. 

みたいな例を見ると、totalと酷似した使い方であると分かる。

いずれにせよ、＜数量表現＋A＋total＞をtotalの使い方の一つとして覚えておいて損はない。
